The family/nanny relationship is special. It doesn’t follow the same rules as other employer/employee relationships.
You are joining a family to look after their children, so it’s important to build trust. Positive and practical communication is key!
This guide will help you establish rapport and give you hints and guidance on maintaining open and healthy communication with your family right from the start. -
Walking into a new role is scary; it helps to be prepared!
Prior to your first day, think about the ages of the children in your new family. Do you need to refresh your knowledge?
You’ll get to know the children quickly of course - but having a fun game, story or treat up your sleeve can really help ease those first-day nerves and tears (theirs or yours!).
We’d suggest sending the parents a quick message beforehand for a bit of intel and permission.
Remind yourself of the notes you took in the interview about parenting styles and research helpful strategies or techniques. -
Your first day and week will naturally bring some nerves and excitement—for you, the children, and the parents.
Stay calm, positive, and confident; it helps everyone feel at ease and reassures parents that their children are in good hands.
Take time to bond with the children, ask thoughtful questions, and make notes as you learn routines and preferences. We have an Important Information Template, which you can download from our Resources section. We highly recommend you and the parents fill out as it covers all key details for a smooth start.
Have a few fun activities ready to ease any anxiety or tears, and use gentle reassurance and distraction to help the children settle in and feel comfortable with you.

OUR NANNY NETWORK:
* WhatsApp - When you’re placed in a role through Kindred, you’ll be invited to our exclusive WhatsApp group — a warm, supportive community of Kindred nannies working across London. It’s a great space to meet other nannies, share advice, ask questions, and organise nanny meet-ups both in and outside of work.
While Kindred staff occasionally post about upcoming events, the groups are run by nannies themselves, with Kindred Ambassadors — experienced local nannies — acting as group admins. They’re a fantastic point of contact for confidential advice or any general questions about settling into your new role or area.
* Facebook - Our Facebook Group, The Kindred Nanny Network, is where we organise all our group events: GOSH fundraisers, Summer Picnics, Nanny Meet-ups, Christmas Parties and more!
